Repeal Bill 115

Teachers, education workers, support staff, and education professionals work with students every day to prepare them to be active participants in our democratic society. We teach children to be respectful and we work to ensure that each one reaches his or her potential, understanding what it means to be a good citizen.

In September, the Ontario Liberal government, supported by the Progressive Conservative Party, passed Bill 115. This legislation is an unprecedented attack on free collective bargaining rights. Collective bargaining gives employees a voice in determining their wages and working conditions, and has historically set the stage for the benefits we all now enjoy, such as health care and CPP.

Bill 115 undermines the guarantees made to al Canadians under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And even though it affects the education sector today, it sets a dangerous precedent for all Ontarians in the future.

As teachers, we understand that the most important lesson we can teach our children is that standing up for what is right is important; defending our democratic rights is critical. We are opposed to this legislation and any that denies people their fundamental rights.
